Influence of Fusel Oil Components on the Distillation of Hydrous Ethanol Fuel (Hef) in a Bench Column

Abstract: -The components of fusel oil form azeotropes with water, resulting in challenges in obtaining hydrous ethanol fuel (HEF) and increasing investment and operating costs. The aim of this study was to evaluate how the presence of fusel oil affected HEF distillation. Mixtures of ethanol (6.0 to 6.5 % w/w) and water (93.0 to 94 % w/w) containing different concentrations (zero to 0.5 % w/w) of 3-methyl-1-butanol, 2-methyl-1-propanol, propan-1-ol and propan-2-ol were distilled in a laboratory apparatus. Under total re… Show more

“…In addition, the pairs: Figure 1 (1-Propanol/Ethanol) - Figure 3 According Pedroza et al (2015) 98% (molar fraction) of the fusel oil composition consists of ethanol, water, and isoamyl alcohol. Mayer et al (2015) claims this superior alcohol corresponds to approximately 60% (% w/w) of this blend. There are some studies in the literature that only consider these three components to characterize the fusel oil.…”

“…Although the composition of the fusel oil depends on factors such as the raw material used for its production, and the conditions of the fermentation medium (CALAM et al, 2014;AWAD, et al, 2018;EUSTÁCIO et al, 2018), the system was modeled according to the compatibility between mixtures of the literature that summarize actual compositions processed by the Brazilian sugar and alcohol sector. In this way, the fusel oil was considered as a mixture of ethanol, water, propanol, isobutanol and isoamyl alcohol (BATISTA; MEIRELLES, 2011;FERREIRA et al, 2013;CALAM et al, 2014;MAYER et al, 2015). The assertions of the aforementioned authors and of Pedroza et al (2015) were the basis for the determination of the fractions of each of these components (Table 1).…”

“…Esse álcool pode ser extraído a partir do óleo fúsel [12]. O óleo fúsel é um resíduo obtido da produção de etanol [13], que geralmente são gerados 2,5 litros de Por outro lado, ao final de 6 horas de reação ocorrendo a 110ºC não se observa a separação de fases. Este mesmo comportamento é relatado por [16] que utilizando KOH como catalisador para a transesterificação isoamílica do óleo de soja não observou separação entre glicerina e biodiesel.…”
