Influence of Foliar Application with Moringa (Moringa oleifera L.) Leaf Extract on Yield and Fruit Quality of Hollywood Plum Cultivar

Abstract: This investigation was carried out during 2015 and 2016 seasons on twelve trees five years old of "Hollywood" plum trees (Prunus salicina Lindl.) grown in loamy clay soil in a private orchard at Ashmoun, Monofia, governorate, Egypt. Trees were sprayed with (0%, 4%, 5%, 6%) moringa (Moringa oleifera L.) leaf aqueous extract at full bloom stage+fruit setting stage+two weeks after fruit setting stage. Plums treated with 6% moringa leaf aqueous extract exhibited significantly higher setting, yield, fruit weight, f… Show more

“…This is explained by the fact that the addition of humic materials improves physical and chemical characteristics of saline soil. This finding stands in agreement with those of Mackowiak et al (2001), Nardi et al (2002), Cimrin and Yilmaz (2005), Merwad and Abdel-Fattah (2015), and Thanaa et al (2017).…”

“…Foliar spray with MLE increased plant growth and yield by 20%-35% (Makkar and Becker 1996;Foidle et al 2001;Basra et al 2005;Nouman et al 2012;Merwad 2015aMerwad , 2015b. The MLE is rich with ascorbic acid, mineral nutrients [i.e., iron (Fe), K, and Ca], and amino acids and had an effect on increasing the plant growth (Makkar and Becker 1996;Basra et al 2009;Merwad and Abdel-Fattah 2017;Thanaa et al 2017).…”

“…It is already integrated into the culinary culture of Sulawesi Tenggara Province, and people often consume it as vegetables. Kelor leaves contain multiple micronutrients that are essential for babies and pregnant woman, such as beta carotene, thiamin (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), calcium, iron, phosphor magnesium, zinc, dan vitamin C (Daba, 2016;Rudianto & Alharini, 2013;ShM, Kassim, AbouRayya, & Abdalla, 2017). Kelor is recommended to be transformed into flour because this form is more durable and easy to store (Jerri, Adolfsen, McCullough, Velegol, & Velegol, 2012;Kusharto & Damayanthi, 2017).…”

“…Further, plants treated with M. oleifera leaf extract were observed to be more pest and disease resistant. Thanaa et al [5], investigated the outcome of foliar application of M. oleifera leaf extract in Hollywood plum. Towards, this, Hollywood plum trees were sprayed with varying concentrations of moringa leaf aqueous extract (0%, 4%, 5%, 6%) at three stages: (1) Full bloom stage, (2) Fruit setting stage, and (3) 2-weeks after fruit setting stage.…”
