Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of feeding dried grape marc to fattening steers on the fatty acids composition of the hepatic tissue (liver). The feeding trial used 20 steers with an average initial body weight of 253 kg assigned uniformly to two groups, control (C diet) and experimental (E diet). Generally, one of the most significant bottlenecks of land-based abalone aquaculture is the high cost of the feed, which is associated with the use of wild fish stocks to produce fish meal. Fish meal is a key ingredient used in aquaculture feeds due to its nutritional profile and palatability. Alternative ingredients, such as insect meal and grape marc, are potential candidates to be included in aquafeeds due to their suitable nutritional profile and more sustainable production. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of insect meal and grape marc on growth and nutritional profile using abalone as an animal model in a feeding trial for 165 days. Proximate analyses were used to identify nutritional variations in abalone tissue and faecal matter, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and gas chromatography mass-spectrometry analyses were utilised to characterise amino acid and fatty acid composition. Results showed a 95% survival for all treatments. The inclusion of insect meal and grape marc did not affect the protein proportions of abalone tissues, but differences were found in the carbohydrate and lipid proportions. The inclusion of insect meal and grape marc significantly affected levels of amino acids L-histidine, L-methionine, and L-phenylalanine, and fatty acids oleic acid, linoleaidic acid, palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid, and α-linolenic suggesting a correlation between the feed source and fatty acid tissue composition. This work provides promising results for future optimisation of abalone diets including more affordable and sustainable alternative ingredients.

This study evaluated the inclusion of two types of cakes obtained from non-genetically modified soybean cultivars (cv. Regale, Italy and cv. Onix, Romania; RSBC and OSBC diet, respectively) in dairy cows compound feeds in order to assess their effects on the quantity (yield) and quality (physico-chemical parameters and fatty acids composition) of raw milk.The feeding trial used 16 multiparous Romanian Black Spotted dairy cows, mid-lactation stage, with an initial average milk yield of 18.46 litres/d, assigned to two groups (8 cows each) for 43 days. Milk yield and milk protein were not influenced by the feeding of RSBC or OSBC diet. However, the OSBC diet decreased significantly milk fat content (3.71% vs. 4.08%). Palmitic acid content in milk fat of dairy cows receiving the RSBC diet was significantly lower in comparison with the OSBC diet (30.27% vs. 32.03%). The conjugated linoleic acid content was significantly higher with the RSBC diet, while the total polyunsaturated fatty acids content did not differ among treatments.

This study evaluated the effect of flax meal (FM) and barley rootlets (BR) in Holstein dairy cows compound feeds (CFs) in order to assess their effects on the quality (physico-chemical parameters and fatty acids composition) and quantity (yield) of raw milk. The trial used a number of 15 multiparous Holstein dairy cows, at 27 weeks midlactation stage, averaging 624.19 kg of BW, with an initial average milk yield of 22.36 litres/day. The cows were divided in 3 groups (C, FM and FMBR diet, respectively), for 63 days. Cows were fed twice/day, and received a basic concentrate mix (corn, soybean meal, sunflower meal and wheat bran) and roughage (alfalfa hay and corn silage). The use of FM in dairy cows' CFs resulted significant increase of milk fatty acids (FA) and milk yield. At the end of the trial for both experimental groups (FM and FMBR), the C18: 3n3 FA was significantly higher, (0.526% and 0.522% vs. 0.23% C group of total FAMEs), representing a good source of n3. This indicates that the fatty acid addition from FM was favourable to the C18: 3n3 fatty acid in milk.
