Influence of environmental and anthropogenic parameters on thallium oxidation state in natural waters

Abstract: The abandoned mining area of Valdicastello Carducci (Tuscany, Italy) is characterized by the massive presence of thallium in the acid mine drainages and in the valley stream crossing the region. We previously found that Tl(III), generally considered the less stable oxidation state of thallium, is present both in the stream and in tap water distributed in the area, whereas acid mine drainages only contain Tl(I). These findings posed some concern related to the reactivity and dispersion of this toxic element in … Show more

“…Tl(III) also has been observed in some aquatic environments (Campanella et al, 2017;Campanella et al, 2018) but no information about its interactions with clay minerals exists. It could be usefull to assess the potential role of those minerals in Tl(III) stability in natural waters for instance.…”

“…Indeed, the apparent lack of association between DOM and Tl characterized by AF4/ICP-MS reflects the behavior of this oxidation state. Nevertheless, in acidic waters subjected to photooxidation, Tl(III) could be the predominant oxidation state of the metal (Campanella et al 2018). Therefore, ongoing studies in our laboratory are examining the relationship between Tl(III) speciation and toxicity, using a similar approach to that described in the present study.…”

“…Processes driving Tl chemical speciation and mobility are well documented but some questions remain open (Twining et al, 2003;Karlsson et al,2006;Coup and Swedlund, 2015;Voegelin et al, 2015;Casiot et al, 2017;Campanella et al, 2017;Campanella et al, 2018). Its interaction with natural organic matter (NOM) is one of them (Jacobson et al, 2005a;Liu et al, 2011).…”
