Nuclear energy offers a wide range of applications, which include power generation, X-ray imaging, and non-destructive tests, in many economic sectors. However, such applications come with the risk of harmful radiation, thereby requiring shielding to prevent harmful effects on the surrounding environment and users. Concrete has long been used as part of structures in nuclear power plants, X-ray imaging rooms, and radioactive storage. The direction of recent research is headed toward concrete’s ability in attenuating harmful energy radiated from nuclear sources through various alterations to its composition. Radiation shielding concrete (RSC) is a composite-based concrete that was developed in the last few years with heavy natural aggregates such as magnetite or barites. RSC is deemed a superior alternative to many types of traditional normal concrete in terms of shielding against the harmful radiation, and being economical and moldable. Given the merits of RSCs, this article presents a comprehensive review on the subject, considering the classifications, alternative materials, design additives, and type of heavy aggregates used. This literature review also provides critical reviews on RSC performance in terms of radiation shielding characteristics, mechanical strength, and durability. In addition, this work extensively reviews the trends of development research toward a broad understanding of the application possibilities of RSC as an advanced concrete product for producing a robust and green concrete composite for the construction of radiation shielding facilities as a better solution for protection from sources of radiation. Furthermore, this critical review provides a view of the progress made on RSCs and proposes avenues for future research on this hotspot research topic.

El aumento de la población mundial ha tenido como consecuencia el crecimiento de la industria de la construcción. Lo anterior, implica la explotación de recursos naturales no renovables y por ende un mayor impacto ambiental por la contaminación del suelo, el agua y el aire. Así, el desarrollo sostenible se ha convertido en una prioridad en la industria, por ejemplo, por medio de la incorporación de residuos en la cadena productiva. El acero puede producirse por dos métodos: el alto horno (se funden minerales de hierro) y el horno de arco eléctrico (se funde chatarra metálica reciclada). En este último, el proceso más utilizado en Colombia, se forma la escoria horno de arco eléctrico (EHAE). Este residuo representa una oportunidad de aprovechamiento en la construcción. Varias investigaciones han estudiado el uso de este material como agregado y como materia prima del cemento. Así mismo, su utilización como sustituto de material granular en la construcción de terraplenes, bases, subbases y capas de rodadura, siendo en el área de pavimentos donde mayor aplicación puede darse a la escoria. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo realizar una revisión actualizada del estado del arte sobre el uso de la EHAE en la construcción, para promover la implementación correcta y segura de este residuo y aportar a la sostenibilidad de la industria siderúrgica.

As a by-product of lithium salt mining, the emission of lithium slag increases yearly due to increased demand. Therefore, the utilization of lithium slag faces a huge challenge. In this study, a new approach to using lithium slag as a super-fine aggregate in cement systems was proposed. The use of lithium slag as a super-fine aggregate replacing 0%, 30%, 50%, 70%, and 100% of the standard sand was tested. The main hydration products of cement–lithium slag paste were calcium silicate hydrate gel, calcium hydroxide, unhydrated particles, and a small amount of ettringite. Lithium slag as a super-fine aggregate could significantly reduce the dead load of structures, enhance flexural and compressive strength and the peak stress of mortar, and no more than 50% lithium slag could significantly enhance the permeability of mortar. The study revealed that the replacement rate of lithium slag as a super-fine aggregate could reach 50%, which is five times more than the amount used as supplementary cementitious material. Therefore, the study brings an innovation in the use of lithium slag in cement systems and improves the performance of cement mortar.
