Influence of Electrode Placement on Signal Quality for Ambulatory Pregnancy Monitoring

Abstract: Noninvasive fetal health monitoring during pregnancy has become increasingly important in order to prevent complications, such as fetal hypoxia and preterm labor. With recent advances in signal processing technology using abdominal electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings, ambulatory fetal monitoring throughout pregnancy is now an important step closer to becoming feasible. The large number of electrodes required in current noise-robust solutions, however, leads to high power consumption and reduced patient comfort.… Show more

“…Next, the fetal VCG is extracted from the obtained eight-channel fetal ECG using a fixed matrix transformation as described in [35]. All fetal QRS-complexes in the fetal VCG are detected using the Rpeak detection algorithm presented by Rooijakkers et al [36].…”

“…determination of the fetal hart rate) is fixed [3]. Therefore a noise-reconfigurable frontend amplifier covering the required range of input-referred-noise levels with good noise efficiency factor (NEF) would offer better energy efficiency in the actual use than a point solution specified for worst-case SNR [4].…”

“…The PCB was designed to meet the sensor distribution requirements [12]. Its substrate (DuPont Kapton polyimide film) is flexible only in one direction, which makes it difficult to adapt a squared PCB to the round pregnant belly shape.…”

“…Solid-gel sticky elec-trodes are chosen to have a good electrode-skin contact, and thus, reduce motion artifacts. They will be optimally arranged [12] for measurement of FECG and EHG during the last weeks of pregnancy. With this, the system aims to have an increased robustness against signal loss due to constant changes in the fetal position.…”
