Influence of dynamic seals on silt abrasion of the impeller ring in a centrifugal pump

Abstract: The water flow and movement of silt in a prototype double suction centrifugal pump was simulated using an EulerLagrange multiphase flow model. Back-blade and J-groove configurations were adopted to protect the impeller ring from silt abrasion. Four back-blades and four J-grooves were considered. The results show that the relative velocity of water around the impeller ring is too low to move silt out of the spacing between the impeller and the casing, which results in a high silt concentration around the impell… Show more

“…In this paper, the Eulerian-Lagrangian method is used to simulate the discrete phase particles in the sediment-laden stream of the water turbine [13][14][15]. The flow control equation of continuous phase is solved by N-S equation.…”

“…One is the Finnie model, whose erosion amount is a function of velocity and impact angle. The other is the Tabakoff erosion model [13], which includes more available solid parameters and has been verified by the test results of Francis turbine components and materials. Zhang et al [14] analyzed the erosion condition of the turbine by using the Tabakoff erosion model.…”

“…The sediment erosion in the centrifugal pump is a typical abrasive erosion. 1,[7][8][9][10] Qian investigated the effects of the silt concentration and silt size on pump performance by devising a new experiment for a double-suction centrifugal pump. 11 Generally, the flow with FSV in pure water is a typical airliquid two-phase flow.…”

“…Under the small flow condition, the average velocity in the clearance increases, and the average velocity along the flow direction decreases, which proves that the clearance has throttling effect. Under the condition of large flow rate, when the clearance size of the band increases, the pressure distribution on the back of the runner, the flow pattern of the draft tube, and the pressure distribution of the draft tube also improve [9].…”
