Numerous landslide dams have been induced in recent years as a result of frequent earthquakes and extreme climate hazards. Landslide dams present serious threats to lives and properties downstream due to potentially breaching floods from the impounded lakes. To investigate the factors influencing the stability of landslide dams, a large database has been established based on an in-depth investigation of 1,737 landslide dam cases. The effects of triggers, dam materials, and geomorphic characteristics of landslide dams on dam stability are comprehensively analyzed. Various evaluation indexes of landslide dam stability are assessed based on this database, and stability evaluation can be further improved by considering the dam materials. Stability analyses of aftershocks, surges, and artificial engineering measures on landslide dams are summarized. Overtopping and seepage failures are the most common failure modes of landslide dams. The failure processes and mechanisms of landslide dams caused by overtopping and seepage are reviewed from the perspective of model experiments and numerical analyses. Finally, the research gaps are highlighted, and pathways to achieve a more complete understanding of landslide dam stability are suggested. This comprehensive review of the recent advances in stability and failure mechanisms of landslide dams can serve as a key reference for stability prediction and emergency risk mitigation.

The design of engineering measures during emergency phases is crucial in mitigating the river flow impacts on landslide dams, avoiding dam breaks and related downstream flooding. Man-made hydraulic facilities represent a possible mitigation strategy for reducing the occurrence of dam breaching by diverting river inflow. Semi-empirical equations published in the literature may help define the landslide dam evolution and design the discharge to be diverted into the hydraulic works assuring the dam's stability. These approaches need to be carefully validated with case studies, an important step in evaluating the accuracy of predictive models. The work presents and discusses the pre- and post-seismic hydrologic conditions along the Nera River gorge focusing on the role of the pre-existing anthropic works in mitigating the impact of river discharge on the Sasso Pizzuto landslide dam triggered by the October 30, 2016 earthquake (Central Italy). Considering historical data, the upper part of the river catchment has experienced the highest discharge values during the landslide dam lifetime. The discriminant analysis approach of the hydro-geomorphometric characteristics supported the definition of the critical peak flow, avoiding the dam's instability. Thanks to an upstream hydropower bypass, about 80% of the river discharge increase have been diverted into an underground pipeline built in 1928 to feed the Preci hydroelectric plant (located a few kilometers downstream of the landslide dam). The discriminant analysis model, developed in the literature on other landslides worldwide, had a good performance in managing the upstream river discharge of Sasso Pizzuto dam, expanding its validity on other landslide dams.

As one type of natural disaster, dammed lakes pose a serious threat to the safety of lives and properties downstream. Scientific risk assessments of dammed lakes are key for pre-disaster prevention and post-disaster rescue. However, due to the lack of basic information and uncertainty surrounding materials and loads, risk assessments of dammed lakes are more complex than those of artificial reservoir dams, and comprehensive assessment methods are lacking. Based on the evolution of dammed lake hazard chains, starting with the concept of a dammed lake risk assessment, this paper focused on six aspects: worldwide dammed lake databases, hazard assessments for landslide dams, breach mechanisms and breach processes, flood routing after landslide dam breaching, loss assessments, and risk mitigation measures. A comprehensive review was conducted on the qualitative and quantitative risk assessment methods around the world, as well as future outlooks.
