Influence of directional microstructure on mechanical properties in Al‐based ultrafine bimodal lamellar structured alloy

Abstract: The influence of the directional microstructure on the mechanical properties of Al81Cu13Si6 bimodal eutectic alloy was investigated via minor alloying of Iron (Fe). Al81Cu13Si6 is the well‐known bimodal eutectic alloy, which has a good combination of strength and plasticity. A small amount of Fe elements (0.3‐1 at%) led to the notable microstructural evolution from the nondirectional bimodal eutectic to directional bimodal eutectic structure. With this microstructural change, the compressive mechanical propert… Show more

“…As shown, the Al 81 Cu 13 Si 6 alloy exhibits highest yield strength (up to 750 MPa) but fails with a brittle fracture. However, according to previous studies [16,23], plasticity above 10% can be achieved by Al-alloy with similar composition and microstructure under compression. We think that this contradiction in the plasticity should be attributed to the difference in the deformation mechanism for the compression and tension.…”
