Influence of diltiazem and/or propranolol on rat blood glucose levels in normal and diabetic animals

Abstract: Diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disorders are both common disorders, and it could be anticipated that they coexist in many patients. Diltiazem (DZ) is widely used alone or in combination with propranolol (PROP) for the treatment of hypertension and ischemic heart disease. These drugs could interfere with carbohydrate metabolism and impair glucose tolerance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of oral administration of DZ, PROP (100 and 25 mg kg-1, respectively) and their combination on… Show more

“…The relationship between lactate production and adipocyte size, according to Digirolamo (3), is presented in a positive and significant way, with larger adipocytes being associated with a higher lactate levels in the blood. The Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) strain presents fasting glycemia similar to the SHR (spontaneously hypertensive rats) and Wistar rats (4,8), indicating that the blood glucose is not the determining factor for possible differences in lactate production between these strains. However, the highest weight found in WKY compared to Wistar and SHR (W: 496.8±6.01; WKY: 563.6±14.84, SHR: 274.1±7.466) (5,6) and greater area and diameter of their adipocytes (7) may be indicative of higher lactate production, matching with the Digirolamo studies.…”

“…A number of biological activities have been associated with it, such as antihypertensive [1,2], antiasthemic [2,3], analgesic [4], cardiovascular [5], platelate aggregation inhibitor and Ca antagonist [2]. Recently Ahmed et al [6,7] patented 1,5-benzothiazepine derivatives as potential anticancer drugs.…”

“…1,5-Benzothiazepines were used for the synthesis of thiazolo [2,3-b]- (2) ; oxazino [2,3- (3) and different substituted derivatives (4)(5)(6) . It is well known that benzothiazepines have great importance in discovery of led compounds (7) and possess biological activities such as antihypertensive (8) , analgesic (9) , antidepressants (10) , antiulcer (11) , antagonist of several G-protein coupled receptors (12) and bradykinin agonist (13)(14)(15)(16) . The present work aims at the synthesis of a novel group of fused heterocyclic compounds containing 1,5-benzothiazepine nucleus which may possess biological activities.…”
