The digital economy (DE) plays a crucial role in green innovation (GI) and green development as a new economic form. Based on the panel data of 274 Chinese prefecture-level cities from 2011 to 2019, this paper constructs a comprehensive DE index and conducts two-way fixed effect regression to explore its impact on GI capabilities and examines the mediating effect of industrial structure transformation and upgrading. The research results show that: (1) The development of the DE has significantly improved the GI capability of cities. (2) In terms of space, the development of DE and GI ability development in eastern cities outperform that in central and western regions. However, the development of eastern cities is almost saturated and slow, while the development of central and western cities is faster. (3) The DE has a significant role in promoting GI capabilities in the central and western regions. Although the eastern region has a positive impact, it is negligible. In terms of urban scale, the DE of the large, medium, and small cities positively affects GI capabilities to the effect. (4) The transformation and upgrading of the industrial structure mediate the relationship between the DE and GI. Based on the above conclusions, relevant suggestions for improving GI capabilities around the development of the DE and industrial transformation and upgrading must be devised.

PM2.5 emission causes serious harm to health and hinders the sustainable development of economy and society. Among all the factors affecting PM2.5 pollution, the role of new economic forms and information technology innovation is lacking. This study aims to explore the impact of digital economy on PM2.5 pollution and its influencing mechanism using data from 281 prefecture-level cities from 2011 to 2016. The empirical results demonstrate that digital economy is conducive to reducing PM2.5 pollution. In other words, the digital economy is conducive to alleviating PM2.5 pollution. Further analysis shows that the digital economy promotes technological innovation, which is an important mediating mechanism affecting PM2.5 pollution. Additionally, the inhibitory effect of digital economy on PM2.5 pollution is more significant in the eastern and central regions. Unfortunately, the negative impact of digital economy on PM2.5 pollution is not significant in the western region. The conclusions provide a new strategy for reducing pollution emissions and improving environmental quality and technological innovation.

The rapid development of information and communication technologies has brought the concept of digital economy into the limelight. Data elements have played a more important role in economic production. As an environmentally friendly economic model, the data factor-driven economy, compared to the traditional one, has low energy consumption and less pollution emissions. Hence, the effect of digital economy development on ecological performance is worth exploring. We measured the digital economy index and the ecological performance index for 30 provinces in China. Furthermore, the relationship between the two was analyzed with the help of a dynamic spatial Durbin model. The results showed the following: 1) closely related to the regional economic foundation, the development level of the digital economy showed obvious spatial characteristics that were high in the eastern region and low in the western region in China. 2) Over time, the pattern of ecological performance in China has changed markedly, showing a high level in the south and a low level in the north. 3) The digital economy showed a significant promoting effect on ecological performance, with a strong externality in space that could have a spillover effect on the surrounding areas. 4) The effect of the digital economy on ecological performance had a significant positive effect, although it lagged behind over time. In addition, the effect has regional heterogeneity and was more obvious in developed regions. Based on these findings, we recommend that the role of ICT in economic activity be strengthened in some developed regions. However, in some developing regions, a balance needs to be struck between digitalization and environmental benefits. At the same time, developed regions should be encouraged to realize economic collaboration with developing regions, with the help of data elements in an effort to narrow the regional gap.
