Influence of Different Professional Prophylactic Methods on Fluorescence Measurements for Detection of Occlusal Caries

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of professional prophylactic methods on the DIAGNOdent 2095, DIAGNOdent 2190 and VistaProof performance in detecting occlusal caries. Assessments were performed in 110 permanent teeth at baseline and after bicarbonate jet or prophylactic paste and rinsing. Performance in terms of sensitivity improved after rinsing of the occlusal surfaces when the prophylactic paste was used. However, the sodium bicarbonate jet did not significantly influence the performance of the fl… Show more

“…They were cleaned for 15 s with water and toothbrush (Trisa ultra super-sensitive, BrushAbo, Switzerland) and for 10 s with a water-powder jet cleaner (PROPHYflex II, KaVo, Biberach, Germany) and sodium hydrogen carbonate powder. In order to not have powder remnants in the fissure, 5 the teeth were then rinsed off with the three-in-one syringe for 10 s. 16 During the measurements, they were stored in 100% humidity. Photographs of the occlusal surfaces were taken (at 6.25× magnification) and one spot from each tooth was selected in the fissure surface (test site).…”

“…In addition to the visual-tactile method, these include radiography and light-induced fluorescence methods. [3][4][5][6] These methods are based on the phenomenon of fluorescence, because caries tissues emit fluorescence with different intensities from healthy tissues when excited by lights at specific wavelengths. 3,7,8 Both devices, DIAGNOdent 2095 and DIAGNOdent 2190 (LF and LFpen, Kavo, Biberach, Germany), have been developed aiming the detection and quantification of occlusal as well as approximal caries lesions.…”

“…Aim: This in vitro study by Diniz et al (Caries Res 2011, 45:264-268, [2]) evaluated the influence of two professional prophylactic procedures (sodium bicarbonate prophy-jet and prophylactic paste) on LF, LFpen and FC performance in detecting occlusal caries in permanent teeth.…”
