Influence of Different Polymeric Matrices on the Properties of Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate

Abstract: Six different polymeric matrices were fabricated to reduce the sensitivity of PETN (Pentaerythritol tetranitrate). The polymeric matrices used were individually based on Acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) softened by plasticizer, styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) softened by oil, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) plasticised by dioctyl adipate (DOA), polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), polyurethane matrix, and Fluorel binder. A computerised plastograph mixer was utilised for producing three polymer-b… Show more

“…Compared with spherical MF, the plank-like TA and PDA tiled on the PETN surface have lower deformation, and thus, the desensitivity effects are lower. Compared with PETN-based PBX, 34 the desensitivity effect of in situ coating is better when the content of the shell is the same. Compared with pure PETN, the explosion points of PETN@TA, PETN@PDA, and PETN@MF increase from 227 to 236, 237, and 233 °C, respectively, illustrating that the thermal hazards of PETN can be declined by TA, PDA, and MF shells.…”

“…Low sensitivity helps DNAN to be investigated to take the place of TNT in PAX-21 composition [1]. The performance of several interesting advanced high explosives has been published but the high sensitivity is a main problem in their applications [2][3][4]. Also, several compositions were studied based on low sensitive explosives [5][6][7] and other based on energetic binders [8][9][10][11].…”

“…In addition, the selection of polymer matrix to form a flexible sheet explosive is a target for most of the scientists working in the energetic materials field [11][12][13]. The destructive effect of the sheet explosive is depends mainly on the power and the detonation properties of the high energy filler [14][15][16][17]. Several commercial plastic bonded explosives are available with known characteristics for the applications in different fields [18].…”
