Influence of Different Garlic Treatments on Controlling Basal Stem Rot, Root Rot and Infection by Broomrape in Geranium Plants.

Abstract: wo field experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of different garlic treatments against basal stem rot, root rot and broomrape of geranium and its productivity at the Exp. Farm of Sids Hort. Res. Stat., Agric. Res. Center, Beni-Sweif governorate during 2016 and 2017 growing seasons. It was observed that using garlic as intercropping with geranium, soil amendment in addition to spraying garlic extract effectively controlled basal stem and root rot as well as decreased the infection by broomrape. “…However, Rhizoctonia solani and F. solani showed lower disease severity being 37.5% and 20.83%, respectively, with 20% disease incidence for each. These results are in harmony with the findings of Mohamed et al, (2012), Adolf (2016), Ghazi et al (2018), Dewidar et al (2019), Serag El-Din et al (2020, Avan (2021), andReyad et al (2022).…”

“…In Egypt, root rot and wilt diseases are the most devastating diseases on geranium. Several fungal species were reported to be associated with these diseases in Egypt including Fusarium spp., Rhizoctonia solani, Macrophomina phaseolina (El-Gamal, 1995 andDewidar et al, 2019) F. solani (Haggag and Abdel-Latif, 2001), Macrophomina phaseolina (Ghazi et al, 2018), and Pythium ultimum (Adolf, 2016). Also, Fusarium proliferatum was reported as root rot fungal species on geranium in Egypt (Adolf, 2016).…”

“…Root rot severity was estimated based on the progress of yellowing and root rotting using the rating scale (0-5 scale) according to Dewidar et al (2019). Where:0=0, l=> 0-10, 2=>10-25, 3=>25-50, 4=>50-75 and 5=>75-100%.…”

“…Geranium plants grown in Egypt are susceptible to several plant pathogens, including oomycetes and fungi. These include Fusarium semitectum, Rhizoctonia solani, Macrophomina phaseolina, and Pythium ultimum, which can cause significant damage and yield losses (Dewidar et al, 2019). This root rot complex (Yu et al, 2023) causes symptoms of rotted stems and roots, wilting or yellowing leaves, browning or blackening of the xylem vessels, and plant death (Prasad et al, 2008).…”
