Influence of different composite materials and cavity preparation designs on the fracture resistance of mesio-occluso-distal inlay restoration

Abstract: The aim of the study to evaluate the fracture resistance of a computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) and three indirect composite materials for three different mesio-occluso-distal (MOD) inlay cavity designs. A total of 120 mandibular third molar were divided into three groups: (G1) non-proximal box, (G2) 2-mm proximal box, and (G3) 4-mm proximal box. Each cavity design received four composite materials: Estenia, Epricord (Kuraray, Japan), Tescera (Bisco, USA), and Cerasmart CAD/CAM block… Show more

“…The total depth of the cavity was adjusted to 4 mm, with an axial wall height of 2 mm. Approximal boxes had 1.5 mm mesiodistal width on the gingival floors 1 mm above the CEJ 18 . The dimensions of cavity preparation were confirmed with a digital caliper.…”

“…The sample size was 10 specimens per group, and all were stored in distilled water for 24 h at 37 °C until evaluated with a universal test machine (Instron 6022, Instron, MA, USA). The mean fracture resistance was 2108.4 ± 464.56 N, obtaining higher fracture resistance in a group with juxta-gingival cavities [13].…”

“…Some researchers in dental preparation propose proximal box elevation, because the technique provides increased fracture resistance, but there is great disparity in the results obtained with the technique [3,13,14,15].…”

“…This may associated with the length of the filling margin (3). With a large tooth defect, inlay may represent a better restoration pattern (27).…”
