“…Although the rearing conditions may inXuence the performance of subsequent stages such as cyprids or postlarvae (Pechenik et al 1993;Qiu and Qian 1999;Pechenik 2006;McDonald et al 2009), earlier studies have mainly examined the settlement success of cyprids without a stress history (e.g., Dineen and Hines 1992;Thiyagarajan et al 2003a;Dahlstrom et al 2004;McDonald et al 2009). In this study, we focus on three understudied aspects of stress ecology: the interaction of stressors, their impact on early life stages, and the inXuence of stress history on subsequent life stages.…”

“…For example, B. amphitrite larvae reared at 20°C could successfully metamorphose over a shorter period than those reared at 30°C (Anil et al 2001). Moreover, Pechenik et al (1993) reported that cyprids that were forced to delay metamorphosis showed slow post-settlement growth, in spite of the lack of effects on completion of metamorphosis and post-settlement survival, highlighting the need for further investigation in P. pollicipes. In nature, temperatures over the breeding season vary between 14 and 20°C from May to October, tending to the upper range from July to September.…”

“…As cyprids age, therefore, the number of cyprids incapable of completing metamorphosis will increase. Furthermore, it should be noted that post-settlement growth can decrease in aged barnacle cyprids, even if metamorphosis rate is not affected (Pechenik et al 1993). There are also interesting implications with regard to what might be happening in the wild.…”

“…Esquema do efeito da qualidade fi siológica de larvas lecitotrófi cas na sobrevivência e taxa de crescimento dos juvenis após o assentamento e na população adulta. poderia diminuir o crescimento dos recrutas (Pechenik et al 1993, Wendt 1996. Para poder completar a metamorfose com sucesso, é necessária uma quantidade mínima de reserva de energia que varia para diferentes espécies.…”
