Influence of Datura stramonium Leaf Extract on Antioxidants and Activities of Metabolic Enzymes of Trigonella foenum-graecum and Lepidium

Abstract: The present investigation aimed to assess the allelopathic effects of aqueous leaf extracts of Datura stramonium L. (family: Solanaceae) on seed germination, hydroxyl radical (• OH), activities of some metabolic enzymes and antioxidants levels of both Trigonella foenum-graecum L. (fenugreek, family: Fabaceae)and Lepidium sativum L. (cress, family: Brassicaceae). The results revealed that Daturaaqueous leaf extract inhibited seed germination and retarded the activities ofthe following enzymes: glucose-6-phosphat… Show more

“…The determination of proline content may be so important in the assessment of the physiological state, more generally to understand stress tolerance in plants (Zhang et al, 2013). Reduction observed in the levels of proline in the study may be due to the mobilization of proline in order to combat the threat posed by the extract (El-Shora et al, 2018). Proline mobilization under stress may perform the role of low molecular weight chaperones.…”

“…The presence of D. stramonium aqueous extracts might have interfered with photosynthesis leading to drastic changes in the physiology of plants. Reduction in photosynthesis might have led to reduced plant growth and reduced fresh biomass accumulation due to reduced water content in the tested species (EL-Shora et al, 2018). According to Oyun (2006), allelochemicals inhibit water absorption which is a precursor to physiological processes like photosynthesis.…”

“…These include, among others, germination behavior and other physio-biochemical responses of test species 11,12,13,14,15,16 . With considerable evidences adduced during the past few decades demonstrating the presence of inhibitory compounds in a wide variety of plant types and plant parts, the recent upsurge of interest in allelopathy, with major volumes of collected papers, books, journals regularly published 17,18,19 has established the topic as one of biological importance. In recent times it is focused on establishing research procedures which may improve the importance of evaluations of the allelopathic potential of exotic nonnative weeds Chromolaena odorata and Lantana camara which have become invasive and forms monospecific stands in different ecosystems in West Bengal and surroundings 20 .…”
