Influence of CYP19A1 gene expression levels in women with breast cancer: a systematic review of the literature

Abstract: Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed malignant neoplasm in women and is considered a multifactorial disease of unknown etiology. One of the major risk factors is genetic alteration. Changes in CYP19A1 gene expression levels have been associated with increased risk and increased aggressiveness of breast cancer. Increased CYP19A1 gene expression and/or aromatase activity are among the major regulatory events for intratumoral production of estrogens in breast malignant tissues. This systematic review ai… Show more

“…Thus, the expression of CYPs in tumor cells may play an important role in antitumor therapy. Of note, it was shown that the expression of CYPs in tumor cells was usually aberrant, compared with adjacent normal tissues [ 23 ]. The low expression and activity of CYPs, partly owing to distinctive metabolic reprogramming and living conditions, may reduce the activation of antitumor agents in tumor cells, whilst the overexpression of CYPs in tumor cells may rapidly devitalize tumor agent substrates, which may be associated with treatment resistance and cause subsequent tumor relapse and poor prognosis [ 24 , 25 ].…”

“…CYP19A1 encodes for the aromatase enzyme, which plays an essential role in estrogen biosynthesis by chemically aromatizing androgens to estrogen (this conversion is tightly regulated, and any dysfunction is related to a range of disorders—breast cancer and polycystic ovary syndrome, to name a few) [ 43 , 227 ].…”

“…4 Traditionally, high body mass index (BMI), advanced age, as well as high plasma glucose and alcohol consumption were considered to be related to the etiology of BRC. 5,6 In addition, similar to other cancers, the etiology of BRC was closely related to the aberrant expression of multiple genes, both coding 7,8 and non-coding. 9,10 Recently, the role of non-coding gene expression, in particular microRNAs (miRs), in the occurrence of BRC has gradually become a focus of research into the etiology of BRC.…”
