Influence of cryopreservation on human periodontal ligament cells in vitro

Abstract: Cryopreservation of teeth before autotransplantation may create new possibilities in dentistry. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a standardised cryopreservation procedure on human periodontal ligament (PDL) cell cultures. Human PDL fibroblasts obtained from immature third molars of 11 patients were cultured and divided into two groups. The experimental group was cryopreserved and cultured after thawing. The control group was cultured without cryopreservation. A comparison was made between… Show more

“…One of the reasons can be that there are still a lot of questions about the different reactions in the dental tissue following cryopreservation. Although several reports about this topic have been published (Bartlett and Reade 1972;Price and Cserepfalvi 1972;Schwartz and Andreasen 1983;Schwartz et al 1985;Schwartz and Rank 1986;Schwartz 1986;Politis et al 1995;Laureys et al 2001;Kawasaki et al 2004;Oh et al 2005;Izumi et al 2007;Temmerman et al 2008), these papers concentrate mainly on the periodontal tissues, because it is generally known that a healthy periodontal ligament (PDL) is an important factor to evaluate success after transplantation. Moreover, a good healing of the PDL is necessary to move the transplanted tooth orthodontically.…”

“…Successful autotransplantation and allotransplantation of cryopreserved teeth using this technique have been reported [2,3]. The conventional cryopreservation method has been proven to maintain the membrane integrity, viability, and differentiation capability of PDL cells [3-5]. …”
