Influence of corn-dried distiller’s grain with solubles on growth performance and blood metabolites of Awassi lambs offered a concentrate diet

Abstract: Objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of partial replacement of soybean meal and barley grain with corn-dried distiller's grains with solubles (DDGS) on growth performance of Awassi lambs. Thirty lambs (3 to 4 months of age; 24.9 ± 1.93 kg; initial BW) were randomly assigned to three diets; (1) control diet (CON), (2) treatment diet containing 75 g DDGS/kg dietary dry matter (DM) (DDGS75) or treatment diet containing 150 g/kg DDGS/kg dietary DM (DDGS150). The study lasted for 63 days. Lamb BW and … Show more

“…All animals completed the experiment without any noticeable health problems or disorders. In agreement with our results, previous studies have shown that the use of AF did not affect the health status of the animals [6,7,8,9,10]. In the current study, no effect on DM, CP, and ADF intake was found.…”

“…Due to the increased international demand for these feeds, their prices have increased significantly, which has led to increased pressure on sheep producers. Researchers are therefore interested in the use of cheap alternative feeds (AF) in livestock diets, such as bread by-products (BB), carob pods (CARP) [8], olive cake (OC) [7], and dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) [9,10]. In addition, the use of these feeds would reduce pollution for the environment if it remains without disposal.…”

“…Concurrent with previous studies that were reported in our lab (Obeidat et al 2012;Obeidat et al 2016aObeidat et al , 2016bObeidat 2018), this study proved that corn DDGS, as agro-industrial by product, is cheaper and would be more economical to feed nursing Awassi ewes compared with the other ingredients such as barley grain and soybean. Such results show the benefits of using corn DDGS in the ration.…”

“…The early stages of milk production are critical as they affect the lactation outcome and, hence, lamb preweaning growth. Rearing livestock on non-by-product grains and protein sources is usually very costly, as the price of feeds is the greatest variable expense in the sheep industry, affecting productivity and reducing profitability (Obeidat and Shdaifat 2013;Obeidat 2018). Thus, by-products such as corn dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) are great feed alternatives that can be fed to livestock to decrease the cost of production, thereby improving profitability (Obeidat 2018).…”

“…Obeidat (28) evaluated Awassi lambs of 24.9±1.93 kg LW, to which they were offered a completely mixed ration of barley grain, soybean cake and 15% dried distillers grains with solubles, consuming 1,059 g DM / animal / d and achieving live weight gain of 212 g / animal / d and a conversion of 5.03 kg of DM / kg of LW gained, much higher than T 4 .…”
