Influence of chitosan coating on the oral bioavailability of gold nanoparticles in rats

Abstract: Gold nanoparticles are one of the most extensively investigated metallic nanoparticles for several applications. It is less toxic than other metallic nanolattices. The exceptional electrical and thermal conductivity of gold make it possible to be administered as non-invasive radiofrequency irradiation therapy that produces sufficient heat to kill tumor cells. Nanoparticles are generally administered intravenously instead of orally due to negligible oral absorption and cellular uptake. This study evaluated the … Show more

“…Encapsulated plant extracts acquire excellent biological properties, including cytotoxicity, bioavailability (Alalaiwe et al., 2019; Esmaile et al., 2020), antioxidant (Hertadi, Amari, & Ratnaningsih, 2020), antimicrobial (Sadhukhan et al., 2019), stability and solubility (Muhammad et al., 2020), and anti‐inflammatory and antidiabetic (Vijayakumar et al., 2019) activities with the comparison of extract alone. The above literatures pointed out that the nanotechnology could be an excellent method to improve the functional properties of antioxidants (Esmaile et al., 2020; Madhu et al., 2020), but not always.…”

“…The oral bioavailability of chitosan‐coated AuNPs (C‐AuNPs) was about 25‐folds higher than the polyethylene glycol (PEG)‐coated AuNPs (Alalaiwe et al., 2019). Using modified apple polysaccharide to conjugate with AuNPs, the loaded insulin could induce up to 3.36‐folds decrease in blood glucose level of the rats, while the free insulin did not decrease the blood glucose level (Kumari et al., 2020).…”

“…In recent advances, modern age gold nanoparticles are generally administered intravenously instead of orally due to negligible oral absorption and cellular uptake. In a study that evaluated the oral bioavailability of gold nanoparticles coated with chitosan (C-AuNPs) in rats, a natural mucoadhesive polymer, the oral bioavailability of C-AuNPs was found to be 2.46% which is approximately 25 folds higher than polyethylene glycol (PEG) coated gold nanoparticles, reported earlier [20].…”

“… 45 , 75 A similar delay in the peak was observed for chitosan-coated gold NPs. 79 The peptide conjugation caused a delayed elimination as witnessed by a larger t 1/2 E in cNP1, cNP2 and cNP4 and an absence of the elimination phase in cNP3. A similar observation was previously reported in which the EGFR-targeted NPs prolonged the plasma and the tumor half-lives and the MRT of lonidamine relative to the non-targeted NPs.…”
