Influence of Chemical Allograft Preservation Procedures on the Human Immunodeficiency Virus

Abstract: Since chemically preserved allogenic transplants have an established place in reconstructive procedures, the possibility of transferring the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) with these transplants has been intensively discussed. In this study the authors obtained brain and spleen samples from six HIV-infected cadavers and preserved them with Merthiolate, Cialit, and formaldehyde. After preservation, the tissues were examined for proviral HIV-1 DNA (gag, pol, env) using the polymerase chain reaction. Proviral… Show more

“…This finding was in contrast to the extensive clinical experience of Dingman and Grabb, 17 who found that the irradiated costal cartilage homografts had little long-term resorption and were even superior to fresh autogenous cartilage in most aspects. It is noteworthy that the radiation dose and duration of irradiation in these two studies were different (ie, 6 mil- 20 Their study showed that HIV DNA was not destroyed in preservation procedures with thimerosal, cialit, and formaldehyde.…”

“…This resulted in a hard, nonviable graft. The question of safety concerning an infective transmissible virus like HIV was raised by Bujia et al 20 Their study showed that HIV DNA was not destroyed in preservation procedures with thimerosal, cialit, and formaldehyde.…”

“…It was only in 1997, for example, that it came to light that southern Italy is an area of hyperendemicity for hepatitis C virus 23 and that the excess infections most probably resulted from iatrogenic transmission associated with Salk polio vaccinations between 1956 and 1965 22 . Further, while the thiomersal in MDVs is effective against bacteria, there is no evidence that it is effective against HIV, hepatitis C or prion diseases 5 , 24 …”
