Influence of Blend Composition and Compatibilizer on Mechanical and Morphological Properties of Recycled HDPE/PET Blends

Abstract: Polymer blends based on recycled high density polyethylene (rHDPE) and recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate) (rPET) with and without ethylene-glycidyl methacrylate copolymer (E-GMA) as compatibilizer were fabricated in a co-rotating twin screw extruder. The effects of rPET and compatibilizer content on the mechanical properties and morphological stability of rHDPE-rich blends were investigated. The rHDPE/rPET (75/25 wt/wt) blend compatibilized with 5 php (per 100 part of polymer) E-GMA showed an enhancement of… Show more

“…This can be attributed to the fact that 5 wt% EMA-GMA has not been sufficient to produce the necessary reactions. Chen 28 showed, by means of FTIR analysis, the presence of reaction between end groups of -COOH or -OH of rPET chain and the epoxy group of E-GMA, observed from the decrease in intensity or disappearance of the E-GMA epoxy peak.…”

“…The rHDPE/rPET weight ratio used was 75/25 (w/w) and 5 wt.% EGMA, based on the weight of rHDPE and rPET added to the matrix. This matrix composition was chosen from the authors' previous study (Chen et al 2014). As shown in Fig.…”

“…Using PCR such as recycled polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and PET, the use of virgin plastic could be eliminated, one potential solution to the problem of waste plastic pollution. PCR polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) account for a large amount of all waste plastic materials (Chen et al 2014;2015c). Many studies have been conducted on the preparation and characterisation of natural fibre composites based on PCR plastics (Lei et al 2009;FĂĄvaro et al 2010).…”
