Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were analyzed in invertebrate and fish species collected from Bohai Bay, China in 2007 to 2008. The concentrations of the 16 detected PBDE congeners were in the range of 1.4 to 425 and 2.9 to 767 ng/g lipid for invertebrates and fish, respectively. The summed concentrations of the six major PBDE congeners (BDE-28, 47, 99, 100, 153, 154) (Σ(6)PBDEs) in fish were significantly higher than in invertebrates, while demersal fish concentrations were higher than pelagic fish. The congeners BDE-47, 99, and 100 contributed more in viscera or liver than in muscle, indicating that the metabolic capability of the viscera or liver is greater than that of muscle. The ratio of BDE-47/99 was relatively higher in fish than in invertebrate samples, suggesting a more developed metabolism capacity in fish. Polybrominated diphenyl ether congeners tend to accumulate in viscera or liver rather than in muscle. The fully brominated congener BDE-209 was detected in some species, suggesting that it can be accumulated by organisms. Uptake from sediment may be the major uptake pathway for most brominated PBDEs in benthic species.

a b s t r a c tIn this study we evaluated the use of Talitrus saltator as biomonitor of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) contamination of the supralittoral zone of Mediterranean sandy shores, an area characterized by a strong input of contaminants but not yet investigated about the presence of these pollutants. We detected the presence of twenty PBDE congeners in amphipods and sand samples collected along the Tyrrhenian coast of central Italy. Eight congeners were detected in all samples. Among them, the BDE-209 was the most abundant in both amphipods and sand samples followed by BDE-99, BDE-153 and BDE-47 in animals, and BDE-99, BDE-47 and BDE-100 in sediment. The RPBDEs in amphipods was higher (on the average 2.5-5-fold) than in sand for almost the totality of congeners detected and each sampling site, suggesting the good capacity of sandhoppers to accumulate these pollutants. Moreover statistical analysis revealed significant differences in PBDE concentrations recorded in tissues of T. saltator among sampling sites. Therefore our results suggested the possible utilization of T. saltator as a biomonitor of PBDE contamination of the supralittoral zone of Mediterranean sandy shores.

We compared behavioural (burrowing speed), biochemical (acetylcholinesterase [AChE] inhibition, activities of digestive enzymes) and physiological (feeding and egestion rates, condition) responses in Nereis diversicolor originating from a multipolluted estuary (Loire estuary) and a relatively clean site (Bay of Bourgneuf) on 3 occasions during spring 2008. Significant inhibition of AChE and digestive enzymes (amylase and carboxymethylcellulase) activities were recorded in individuals from the Loire estuary compared to the reference site. At the individual level no significant intersite differences in burrowing speed were observed when ragworms were exposed to their sediment of origin. No link between AChE activity and burrowing behaviour was found in worms from either site. Cross-tests revealed that behavioural disturbances in locomotion were not due to neurological dysfunction but to avoidance of contaminated sediments. Feeding and egestion rates were depressed significantly in worms originating from the Loire estuary compared to the reference site. These behavioural impairments were accompanied by changes in digestive enzyme activities, which can explain the generally poorer condition of ragworms from the Loire estuary. Temporal changes in responses reported in the present study underline the importance of the fluctuation of environmental factors and thus the need for more than one sampling series to assess the health status of a given site. Disturbances at the different levels of biological organisation are likely explained by environmental contamination either chronic in the Loire estuary or the result of a small oil spill.
