Influence of BAS-145138 on the Activity of Sulfonylurea and Imidazolinone Herbicides

Abstract: This study demonstrates that corn can be partially safened by BAS-145138 against sulfonylurea and imidazolinone herbicides. The corn seeds were impregnated with BAS-145138 by soaking the seeds for 6 h in solutions of the safener. BAS-145138 had no effect on corn growth. However, corn shoot and root growth in length, fresh weight, and dry weight was partially protected by BAS-145138 from the phytotoxic effects of the sulfonylurea herbicides thiameturon and CGA -136872. Similar protection was given to corn aga… Show more

“…This concentration of safener produced significant protection from injury due to 400, 1200, and 4000 nM imazaquin. Similar results were obtained with 1 mM BAS-145-138 by Devlin and Zbiec (1991). BAS-145-138 provides a 1.5x safening effect (defined as the ratio of the Iso value for the safened versus unsafened seedlings).…”

“…The efficacy of BAS-145-138 as a safener for several imidazolinone and sulfonylurea herbicides has been partially evaluated. Corn shoot and root growth in length, fresh weight, and dry weight were partially protected by BAS-145-138 from the phytotoxic activity of the imidazolinone herbicide imazaquin (Devlin and Zbiec 1991). BAS-145-138 was also moderately effective in protecting corn from injury due to chlorimuron-ethyl (Lamoureux and Rusness 1991) but it reduced the herbicidal effect of three other sulfonylurea herbicides on corn (Devlin and Zbiec 1990).…”

“…Table 2 Safening influence of 1-(4-fluorophenylthiocarbamoyl)-4-methylpiperazine (B-6) on the herbicidal effect of chlorsulfuron (CS) on the growth of maize depending on the time between the application of herbicide and the tested compound (Means ± SE, n=6) Studies on the mode of action of chlorsulfuron have shown that this herbicide appears to block the activity of acetolactate synthase (ALS, EC 4.1.3.18), leading to a decrease in the levels of three amino acids (valine, leucine and isoleucine). Consequently, the protein synthesis so necessary for plants is eventually terminated and the treated plant dies (Devlin and Zbiec, 1991). However, Clayton and Reynolds (1991) reported that protein synthesis is not inhibited by chlorsulfuron.…”
