Influence of aramid fibers on the mechanical behavior of a hybrid carbon–aramid–reinforced epoxy composite

Abstract: This article is focused on the study of the contribution of aramid fibers in a hybrid carbon-aramid fiber twill weave used to reinforce epoxy resin. To evaluate the influence of the aramid fibers, a comparative study between carbon and carbon-aramid woven-reinforced composites, considering the mechanical behavior of both materials under several loading conditions, is performed. The tests used in this study are meant to analyze the effect of aramid reinforcements on the composite stiffness, strength, impact, an… Show more

“…Since the 1960s, the use of synthetic fibers as reinforcement in epoxy resin composites increased dramatically due to its outstanding mechanical properties (Jawaid & Khalil, 2011). Epoxy composites have been produced with a variety of reinforcements including carbon fibers (Almeida, Ornaghi, Lorandi, Bregolin, & Amico, 2017), glass fibers (Sathishkumar, Sathishkumar, & Naveen, 2014), carbon/glass hybrids (Monticeli, Ornaghi, Woorwald, & Cioffi, 2019), carbon/aramid hybrids (Pincheira, Canales, Medina, Flores, & Ferna, 2018).…”

“…In the 1980s, aramid fiber reinforced aluminum alloy laminates (ARALL) [16,17] were first implemented as wing skin of Fokker Aircraft's F-27. Subsequently, Douglas Company of the United States began to use the ARALL laminate to manufacture the cargo door of C-17 large military transport helicopter, and the weight was reduced by 26%.…”

“…32,33 For Specimen B, significant matrix cracks and delamination are found at the bottom as shown in Figure 9(b). Meanwhile, AE signals with high-amplitude and high-energy are generated, as shown in Figures 5(b) and 6(b). Afterward, a third loading is performed (reaching point C).…”
