“…On the one hand, in the periodontitis group, we observed spontaneous periodontal healing at 1, 2, or 4 weeks compared with baseline. This healing was characterized by a decreased surface of inflammatory infiltration, alveolar bone remodeling, and epithelial reattachment, confirming the results reported by Coimbra et al [38], who also observed significant repair of the soft tissue and regeneration of the alveolar bone in rats 15 days after ligature removal. On the other hand, we observed delayed periodontal healing in the stress group, and the periodontal breakdown was significantly more severe in the stress group than in the periodontitis group.…”

“…We hypothesized that androgens also play a role on bone and soft tissue metabolism during repair in females. One of the main advantages of the ligature‐induced periodontal disease model is the possibility to analyze the shift from the inflammatory response to the early phase of periodontal repair, which is marked by higher levels of cytokines and growth factors, polymorphonuclear leukocytes and osteoclasts; whereas both spontaneous repair of the soft tissues and alveolar bone regeneration are observed 15 days following ligature removal . Thus, the purpose of this study was to measure the impact of androgens and their receptors on periodontal tissues during periodontal repair in female rats.…”

“…Regardless, the involvement of LL-37 may represent an important link between enhanced inflammation and purinergic signaling. The recent observation that the P2Y 12 antagonist clopidogrel (Plavix) reduced levels of IL-6 and TNF-α in a rat model of periodontal disease supports the pro-inflammatory role of extracellular ATP (Coimbra et al, 2011).…”
