Fatty acids are among the most studied nutrients in human metabolism and health. Endogenous fatty acid status influences health and disease via multiple mechanisms at all stages of the life cycle. Despite widespread interest, attempts to summarize the results of multiple studies addressing similar fatty acid–related outcomes via meta-analyses and systematic reviews have been disappointing, largely because of heterogeneity in study design, sampling, and laboratory and data analyses. Our purpose is to recommend best practices for fatty acid clinical nutrition and medical studies. Key issues in study design include judicious choice of sampled endogenous pools for fatty acid analysis, considering relevant physiologic state, duration of intervention and/or observation, consideration of specific fatty acid dynamics to link intake and endogenous concentrations, and interpretation of results with respect to known fatty acid ranges. Key laboratory considerations include proper sample storage, use of sample preparation methods known to be fit-for-purpose via published validation studies, detailed reporting or methods to establish proper fatty acid identification, and quantitative analysis, including calibration of differential response, quality control procedures, and reporting of data on a minimal set of fatty acids to enable comprehensive interpretation. We present a checklist of recommendations for fatty acid best practices to facilitate design, review, and evaluation of studies with the intention of improving study reproducibility.

Objective:To analyze the effects of glutamine and valsartan on the brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) of patients with chronic heart failure (CHF).Methods:A total of 140 CHF patients were divided into a treatment group and a control group by random drawing, and were subjected to standard anti-heart failure treatment and administered with valsartan. Besides, the treatment group was also intravenously transfused glutamine. The treatment lasted eight weeks.Results: The overall efficacy of treatment group and control group were 98.6% and 90.0% respectively, with a statistically significant difference (P<0.05). The two groups had significantly increased left ventricular ejection fractions as well as significantly decreased left ventricular end-diastolic volumes and left ventricular end-diastolic dimensions after treatments (P<0.05) compared with those before. There were also inter-group differences between these values (P<0.05). After treatment, the levels of BNP, NT-proBNP and CD8+ in both groups significantly decreased (P<0.05), whereas those of CD4+ significantly increased (P<0.05). The two groups also had significantly different values (P<0.05).Conclusion: Glutamine in combination with valsartan enhanced the therapeutic effects by improving cardiac function, which may be associated with decreased expressions of BNP and NT-proBNP and beneficial effects of glutamine on immune function.

Jatropha curcas is a medicinal plant whose dead leaves are particularly used in arterial hypertension and diabetes treatment. The purpose of this study is to conduct an acute and subacute toxicity study of Jatropha curcas leaves aqueous extract (JCLAE) using OECD method. For acute toxicity, dose limits of 2000 and 5000 mg/kg were used. In subacute toxicity study 4 batches were constituted including a control batch that received distilled water for 28 days and the other 3 batches, JCLAE doses of respectively 200, 400, 800 mg/kg for the same duration. The LD50 was determined and the hematological, biochemical and histological parameters were analyzed in mice. The LD50 is greater than 5000 mg/kg. HDL-C is the only biochemical parameter that has experienced significant rise variation. Hematological analysis showed a decrease in mean platelet volume and Platelets number. The histological study revealed cases of hepatic cellular apoptosis and kidneys tubular necrosis among animals treated with highest dose. JCLAE is less toxic than Jatropha curcas leaves aqueous extract and high-dose JCLAE also has a moderate toxic effect on thrombocyte line and a protective effect on cardiovascular system.
