Influence of Anion Composition on Gas Sorption Features of Cr-MIL-101 Metal–Organic Framework

Abstract: A series of chromium(III) terephthalates MIL-101 with different anion composition of the porous matrix have been synthesized and characterized in adsorption reactions with nitrogen, hydrogen, and methane by volumetric and calorimetric measurements at pressures up to 3.2 MPa. A peculiar local maximum of H2 adsorption heat at concentrations of 0.7–0.9 mmol/g corresponding to the filling of nanosized supertetrahedra was found. It has been shown that the substitution of the fluorine anions by Cl– strongly affecte… Show more

“…On the other hand it is quite close to the number of tetrahedral microcages (0.5 per f.u.). As it was shown in our previous paper, 45 chloride-anions tend to occupy all such microcages thanks to fluoride-anion substitution. Therefore, chloride anions together with F À and NO 3 À compensate the overall charge of the Bi(III)@MIL-101 material.…”

“…The same phenomenon of chlorine distribution into the smaller cavities was established for MIL-101 treated with sodium chloride solution from direct calorimetric experiments which are described in our previous paper. 45 To investigate the catalytic activity of Bi(III)@MIL-101, photodegradation of methyl red (MR) has been chosen as a test reaction. The full decolorization of MR solution (3.5 Â 10 À5 M) was observed in 50-60 min under mercury lamp irradiation.…”

“…Furthermore, the presence of hardly soluble dimethyl sulfone (DMSO 2 ) in the pores cannot be ruled out. The successful action of HF in terms of improved crystallinity and porosity has been documented, 34,39 still its poisonous nature renders its replacement highly desirable even at the expense of slightly less surface area or pore volume. 35 No solid products were obtained from the iron chloride, mesylate or hydrogen sulfate starting materials.…”

“…29,30,34 MIL-101(Cr) has several reported preparations in the literature that vary primarily based on the acid utilized. 27,[35][36][37] The role of the acid during synthesis is not completely understood, but it is known that halides derived from the acid as well as hydroxides derived from water are incorporated into the framework during synthesis. 36 As mentioned above, these halides or hydroxides could potentially act as nucleophiles during catalysis, thereby providing an endogenous co-catalyst.…”
