Influence of Al2O3/SiO2 Ratio on Viscosities of CaO^|^ndash;Al2O3^|^ndash;SiO2 Melt

Abstract: The influence of Al2O3/SiO2 ratio on viscosity of CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 melt was investigated by the rotating cylinder method in this study. Three groups of compositions with different CaO contents of 0.35, 0.4 and 0.45 were studied. From the experimental results, it was concluded that viscosity always first increases and then decreases as gradually increasing Al2O3/SiO2 ratio. The appearance of viscosity maximum may be resulted from the opposite variation tendencies of mean bond strength and the degree of polymeriza… Show more

“…Therefore, viscosities decrease from CAS-1 to CAS-2, CAS-3 to CAS-4. In our previous paper [31], it is also found from experiments that in C a0-A l20 3-S i0 2 melt, viscosity first increases and then decreases as gradually replacing S i0 2 by A120 3, which agrees with the conclusion o f the present study. Figure 8 shows that viscosity always decreases in M g0-A l20 3-S i0 2 system when substituting A120 3 for S i0 2 regardless o f x fco < x ai!o1 or xmec ■> xai,o , .…”

“…The schematic diagram of the experimental apparatus can be found in our previous paper. 1,2) The viscometer was calibrated by using castor oil at room temperature. During the viscosity measurement, both the crucible and the spindle should be properly aligned along the axis of the viscometer, which is very important because a slight deviation from the axis can cause large experimental errors.…”

“…It is closely related to the mass transfer velocity in the slag which determines the reaction kinetics, as well as the effectively separation of slag and metal, etc. Lots of experimental 1,2) and theoretical studies [3][4][5] have been done to investigate the viscosity variation regularity of fully liquid slags. However, in many pyrometallurgical processes, there are always suspension systems composed of liquid slags and insoluble solid particles, for instance, liquid blast furnace slag containing TiC solid particle during the smelting of titanium bearing ore; convert slags containing CaO and 2CaO·SiO 2 solid particles; copper slags containing solid magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) during the copper smelting if the atmosphere becomes too oxidized at the operating temperature.…”

“…However, according to the structural analysis here, the amphoteric effect of Al 2 O 3 always existed, although sometimes it was not directly reflected. Looking at this from a different viewpoint, it is shown in Table II that in several Al 2 O 3 -bearing slags, [16,32,39,40] the viscosities first increased and then decreased with increasing Al 2 O 3 content. This trend mainly appeared in two cases: with high Al 2 O 3 content and with sufficient network formers such as SiO 2 in the slags.…”
