Influence of Air Quality on Pro-environmental Behavior of Chinese Residents: From the Perspective of Spatial Distance

Abstract: Although environmental issues have attracted public attention, there are still many people unwilling to make behavioral changes to solve the problem, which makes promoting pro-environmental behavior become an interesting research topic. This study discusses the influence of air quality on the pro-environmental behavior of Chinese residents from the perspective of spatial distance, providing a theoretical basis and practical application for improving pro-environmental behavior. Through three experiments, this s… Show more

“…The questionnaires data were analysed by ordered logistic regression and ordinary least squares models (Shi, 2015), or mathematical and statistical model (Shi & He, 2012). In another study (Sheng et al, 2020), the in uence of air quality on the pro-environmental behaviour (PEB) of Chinese residents was investigated to provide a theoretical basis and practical application for improving pro-environmental behaviour. A path model was established to test two hypothesizes related to the in uence of air quality and spatial distance in the residents' proenvironmental behaviours.…”

“…The present study provides empirical evidence for the effect of empathy with nature on pro‐environmental behaviour through three studies. This study also considers the division of pro‐environmental behaviours proposed by Fritsche et al (2018) and Sheng et al (2020), and compares the different effects of empathy with nature on public and private pro‐environmental behaviours, verifying that individuals who have empathy with nature are more willing to practice pro‐environmental behaviours in the private sphere. This study contributes to existing environmental psychology research by expanding the research paradigm that empathy with nature promotes individual pro‐environmental behaviours, and provides a reference for subsequent studies to further explore pro‐environmental behaviours, promoting the understanding of factors such as individual cognition and emotion about the environment.…”

“…For example, environmental advertisements of different colours have different effects on consumers' purchase intention (Lim et al, 2020); no effect message can increase the frequency of green behaviours such as consumer protection and recycling (Chwialkowska & Flicinska‐Turkiewicz, 2021). In addition, scholars also pointed out that consumers' anxiety, guilty and other environmental emotions caused by environmental pollution problems such as haze weather make their pro‐environmental behaviours different in different fields (Gao et al, 2021; Sheng et al, 2020).…”

“…To promote PEB, there have been many successful studies on individual psychological factors, external contextual factors [ 21 , 22 ], and demographic characteristics. For individual psychological variables, scholars have mainly explored the predictive role of variables such as attitudes [ 23 , 24 ], values [ 25 , 26 , 27 ], subjective norms [ 28 ], environmental behavioral intentions [ 29 ], and perceived behavior control [ 30 ] on PEB.…”
