Influence of aggregate mineralogical composition on water resistance of aggregate–bitumen adhesion

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe effects of aggregate mineralogical composition on moisture sensitivity of aggregate-bitumen bonds were investigated using four aggregate types (two limestone and two granite) and two bitumen grades (40/60 pen and 70/100 pen). Moisture sensitivity (or water resistance) of the aggregate-bitumen bonds were characterized using retained strength obtained from three different tensile tests (peel, PATTI and pull-off). The results showed significant differences in the amount of moisture absorbed by … Show more

“…Such a mixture has a dense-graded mix type AC 22 35/50 S (EN 13108-1) whose mineral skeleton is composed of limestone aggregates (which allows for sufficient contact with the bitumen to achieve a bond between binder and aggregates) [18] for the different fractions (0/6, 6/12, 12/18, and 18/25 mm) with a maximum particle size equal to 22 mm. The main properties of these aggregates are displayed in Table 1, where it is clear that this material presents appropriate characteristics for its application in the manufacturing of asphalt mixtures.…”

“…Bauxite clinker is the only aggregate that can provide long-term anti-skid performance [7][8][9]. It has important practical significance to apply bauxite clinker to replace some or all aggregates in asphalt mixtures to improve the long-term skid-resistance performance of asphalt mixture.…”

“…For asphalt pavement, the hot-mixed asphalt mixture is commonly obtained at high temperatures by mixing predetermined rations of aggregates (coarse and fine), bitumen, and filler, which, after paving and compaction processes, form a flexible pavement [5,6]. As it is a composite material, its aggregate type, aggregate gradation, air void, binder type, and binder content are the primary factors that control rutting resistance [7].…”

“…During aggregate movement, the slide action of well-bounded particles shear the binder film [3]. For the same aggregate skeleton, asphalt mix produced with a high-modulus bitumen binder results in better rutting resistance [5]. Therefore, enhancing the bitumen properties seems to be a feasible method to provide good resistance to rutting.…”
