The influence of vegetation on the urban climate was studied in the subtropical city Gaborone, the rapidly expanding capital of Botswana with approximately 200 000 inhabitants. Temperature records from an urban and a rural station were analysed for the period 1985-96. In an attempt to explain possible seasonal change in vegetation, NOAA satellite normalized difference vegetation index imagery was analysed. The present urban influence was investigated with temperature loggers at selected urban and rural sites. In addition, mobile measurements revealed spatial patterns in temperature and humidity for different land uses.Seasonal patterns of urban-rural differences in minimum temperatures emerge during the period 1994-96, especially during the winter when the heat island effect is largest. It is shown that differences in urban and rural vegetation over the year partly explain this variation. Mobile measurements reveal a weak nocturnal heat island of 2-3°C during clear and calm nights. There are intra-urban temperature differences that are in the same range as the urban-rural relationship due to the role of vegetation. Evapotranspiration lowers the temperature, which was detected by high humidity in areas of lush vegetation. This becomes apparent at midday, when densely vegetated areas were up to 2°C cooler than rural sites. An oasis effect, therefore, only exists on a highly local basis. In contrast, parts of the city with sparse vegetation are warmer than the countryside.There is an apparent opposed effect of rural and urban vegetation, whereby the former is hindering the temperature from falling and the latter is cooling the environment through evapotranspiration. This can be explained by the overwhelming amounts of imported water in the city promoting evaporative cooling.

Intra-urban cooling in the city of Ouagadougou, capital of Burkina Faso in the Sahel zone of West Africa, was studied during the dry seasons in 2003, 2004 and 2007. The aim was to see how vegetation, built structure and position within the built-up area influenced the nocturnal cooling. Cooling was divided into two phases. In Phase 1 (16 : 00-20 : 00 hours LST = CET), cooling was very different between the sites while in Phase 2 (20 : 00-06 : 00 hours LST), cooling rates differed insignificantly and the whole area cooled almost at the same rate. Thus the temperature differences between the sites developed during these few hours in Phase 1 were preserved during the rest of the night. In Phase 1, Evening Evapotranspirative Cooling was intensive at vegetated sites that cooled almost twice as fast as sparsely vegetated. This was indicated by a humidity rate (increase of specific humidity per hour) that was high at a vegetated site, but considerably lower at a sparsely vegetated. In Phase 2 the humidity rate was slightly negative with little difference between the sites. After a division in vegetated and sparsely vegetated sites built structure (sky view factor) were shown to influence cooling, but no influence of the position within the built-up area was traced. Thus, the site-specific properties dominated cooling, giving large intra-urban temperature differences. The study also showed the importance of considering a large enough source area to account for micro-scale advection.

Resumo: Este estudo tem como objetivo analisa o efeito de borda sobre o microclima de um parque urbano no município de Cuiabá-MT. Para tanto, a temperatura e umidade relativa do ar foram medidas mensalmente in loco e comparadas estatisticamente por análise multivariada de variância para variações espaço-temporais. As diferenças ocorreram no conjunto de pontos próximos às áreas pavimentadas, em que a temperatura do ar em média foi 1,8ºC maior do que nos pontos da região com edificações, e 1,4ºC maior do que a interna ao parque. Quanto à umidade relativa, as áreas pavimentadas tiveram umidade relativa em média 6,5% menor que as edificações e 7% menor que a área interna.Palavras-chave: Clima urbano. MANOVA. Temperatura do ar. In order to accomplish this goal, the temperature and relative humidity were measured monthly in loco, and statistically compared by multivariate analysis of variance considering space-time variations. The differences occurred, especially in the set of points near the paved areas where the average temperature was 1.8ºC higher than the in the region with buildings, and 1.4ºC higher than into the parks. Regarding relative humidity, the paved areas had a relative humidity on average 6.5% lower than by the buildings and 7% less than the internal area.
