Inflammatory pseudotumor of the liver occurring during the course of hepatitis C virus-related hepatocellular carcinoma treatment: A case report

Abstract: HighlightsOccurrence of IPT of the liver during the course of HCC treatment is rare.IPT of the liver may resemble moderately differentiated HCC on dynamic enhanced CT.Hepatic IPT may be associated with latent inflammatory reactions to HCV activity despite negative HCV-RNA.Hepatectomy should be considered for a hepatic lesion suspected as HCC but may be IPT.

“…In rare cases, multiple hepatic IPTs are reported (4,9). In addition, there are some case reports of hepatic IPT extrahepatic growth patterns mimicking the present patient (19)(20)(21). The present case also had two lesions that directly invaded the colon, mimicking malignant tumors.…”

“…Inflammatory pseudotumor of the liver was first described in 1953 and more than 200 patients have since been reported [51,52]. The etiology remains largely unknown but autoimmune reactions, infectious hepatitis, and bacterial infections have all been implicated in the etiology [53]. In certain patients, differential diagnosis from neoplastic liver lesions may necessitate percutaneous biopsy and histopathologic confirmation.…”

“…The etiology and pathogenesis of IPT remain uncertain, although infection, autoimmune phe-nomena, and systemic inflammatory response syndrome have been suggested as possible causes [5][6][7]. IPT of the liver is often difficult to differentiate from other malignant diseases, as the incidence is rare, the pathogenesis is diverse, and imaging findings are variable [8][9][10][11]. The treatment of choice is still surgical resection.…”
