Inflammatory pseudotumor of the liver

Abstract: Inflammatory pseudotumors (plasma cell granulomas) are localized lesions consisting of a fibrous stroma, chronic inflammatory infiltrate with a predominance of plasma cells, and an absence of anaplasia, which can mimic malignant disease by their gross appearance. Reported in many sites, they are most frequently described in the lung. Twelve cases involving the liver and biliary tract have previously been reported. “…On the other hand, microorganisms were not identified by culture or histopathological examination in the majority of cases, including ours. Although Klebsiella 8,9 was reported in two cases, and Escherichia coli 10 and Gram-positive cocci 11 were reported in one case each, respectively, it remains uncertain whether these bacteria caused primary infections or resulted from secondary infections. These details are unknown.…”

“…Infection was considered as a possible etiology [2] . Only two cases with organisms were reported: Escherichia coli was detected in one case [3] , and Gram-positive cocci in the other [4] . Other suggested mechanisms include an immune reaction, liver hemorrhage and necrosis, occlusive phlebitis of hepatic veins, and local reaction to biliary tract [5] .…”
