Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the liver mimicking an infiltrative malignancy in computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging with Gd-EOB

Abstract: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMT) are a benign tumor entity, which rarely develop in the liver. Surgery is the most common treatment for these lesions as it is difficult to distinguish them from malignant liver tumors and local recurrent growth may occur. IMT is a diagnostic challenge for imaging. Only a limited number of reports of single cases or small number of patients described the imaging features on computed tomography. Reports on IMT appearance on magnetic resonance imaging are scarce. We prese… Show more

“…Then, 46 (40.7%) and 67 (59.3%) IPTLs were found in the left and right lobe, respectively. Regarding possible relation with the bile ducts, we have found some information in 9 out of the selected 38 papers [ 7 , 8 , 10 , 16 , 21 , 27 , 32 , 36 , 41 ]. The IPTL determines prevalently biliary ectasia, but in two papers, a small ducts disruption adjacent to the mass [ 27 ] or lithiasis with signs of cholangitis is documented [ 36 ].…”

“…Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors are uncommon in liver and occur more frequently in children and young adults and affect males more than females [3]. It is difficult to distinguish them clinically and radiologically from malignant liver tumors [3,4]. The important entities included in the differential diagnosis are hepatocellular carcinoma and hepatoblastoma.…”

“…However, the true neoplastic potential is supported by the theory of chromosomal aberrations, especially at the anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene loci. 3 In evaluating an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor, gross and histological analysis is needed to make an accurate diagnosis. A gross assessment usually shows a tumor that has an encapsulated and variegated appearance.…”
