Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor Arising in the Pancreatic Head: a Rare Case Report

Abstract: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare neoplastic lesion with tendency toward local aggressive behavior and recurrence. It is primarily a visceral and soft tissue tumor; however, involvement of pancreas is extremely unusual. A localization in the pancreas needs differentiation from other tumors and chronic pancreatitis. We report a case of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor arising in pancreatic head in a 32-year-old female who underwent Whipple's procedure.

“…The preoperative laboratory ndings of pancreatic IMT were nonspeci c for diagnosis of disease. Only few patients with a solitary mass occurring in the head of the pancreas may be elevated in both serum total bilirubin, amylase, and carbohydrate antigen 19 − 9 due to obstruction of the bile duct or pancreatic duct 26 . The radiological features are often deceptive.…”

“…In the other IMT cases, the patients were usually asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally. According to our search in the medical literature, our case is the second IMT case that reported who has been diagnosed after signs and symptoms of acute pancreatitis [10]. Laboratory findings of IMT were variable and nonspecific to the disease [11].…”
