Abstract: Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is a unique breast cancer with a highly virulent course and low 5-and 10-year survival rates. Although IBC only accounts for 1-5% of breast cancers it is estimated to account for 10% of breast cancer deaths annually in the United States. The accuracy of diagnosis and classification of this unique cancer is a major concern within the medical community. Multimodality treatment includes preoperative chemotherapy, mastectomy, and radiation therapy is the therapeutic mainstay and ha… Show more

“…This is believed to be due to the underreporting of cases in this area, as large portions of these areas consist of rural and/or underserved populations. Additionally, the diagnosis of IBC is quite challenging, and, as such, the risk of misdiagnosis is unusually high 2 , 18 , 37 . For this reason, epidemiological studies such as this one are vital for clinicians to understand a disease process with variable presentation amongst diverse population.…”

“…IBC is a rare and rapidly progressing BC subtype that is classically recognized by the appearance of edema, erythema, and pitting of the skin of the breast. In the United States (US), IBC accounts for 2-5% of all BC but is responsible for 7%-10% of BC mortality (1,2). IBC is reputably threatening, evolving over weeks to months into a Ivyspring International Publisher severe disease.…”
