Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Abstract: In the US, H. pylori vacA shows allelic variation in the signal sequence (which may be type sla, slb or s2) and the mid-region (type ml or m2). Previous PCR-based vacA mid-region typing classified most, but not all, Asian and South American strains tested as ml or m2. We now sought to investigate vacA mid-region diversity further.MotlmodL We studied 13 Japanese, 6 Chinese, 9 Thai, and 8 Peruvian H. pylori isolates. cagA was identified by colony hybridisation (CH), vacA signal sequence was typed by PCR, and va… Show more

“…Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are thought to be related diseases or even different manifestations of the same disease. 12 This contention is well supported by epidemiologic similarities and by the increased incidence of both diseases in relatives of patients with Crohn's disease. Therefore, there is a possibility that the immune-mediated colitis seen in our patient derived from the same lymphocyte clones involved in the donor's Crohn's disease, constituting adoptive autoimmunity.…”

“…Increased numbers of polymorphonuclear neutrophils have been observed in IBD 19) , and these cells are believed to be involved in the pathogenesis of IBD through their potential to release multiple microbial products, including reactive oxygen species, cationic peptides, eicosanoids, and proteolytic enzymes 9) . Although NE is produced by neutrophils upon activation, and normally serve in host defense against invading microbial pathogens, this cytotoxic product may lead to impairment in tissue repair when released in an unregulated manner 20) .…”
