Die Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) oder Equine Chronic Inflammatory Bowel Disease ist ein Überbegriff für chronisch entzündliche Darmerkrankungen des Pferdes. Die oft unspezifische Symptomatik und die verschiedenen Formen der Erkrankung stellen hohe Ansprüche an deren Diagnostik und Behandlung. Allen zur IBD zählenden Erkrankungen ist eine Dysfunktion des Gastrointestinaltrakts gemein, die vor allem durch Malabsorption (v. a. Kohlenhydrate, Proteine, Fette, Vitamine, Mineralien) und Maldigestion gekennzeichnet ist. Diese Dysfunktion entsteht durch eine Infiltration von Mukosa und Submukosa des betroffenen Darmab-schnitts mit verschiedenen Entzündungs-und/oder neoplastischen Zellen. Die Art der beteiligten Zellen bestimmt den Charakter der Entzündung und somit auch die jeweilige Form der IBD [1].
