Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Neutrophil–Lymphocyte Ratio: A Systematic Scoping Review

Abstract: Neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a biomarker of the systemic inflammatory response. The objective of this systematic scoping review was to examine the literature on NLR and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). PubMed, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL, CINAHL, ClinicalTrials.gov, Cochrane Specialized Register, DOAJ, PDQT, Biosis Citation Index, Scopus, and Web of Science were systematically searched. A total of 2621 citations yielding 62 primary studies were synthesized under four categories: distinguishing patients w… Show more

“…Assessment of NLR is non-invasive, low cost, and is easily calculated from blood count data routinely. The higher NLR values were associated with higher clinical disease activity, in patients with both CD and UC [149]. However, in assessing endoscopic activity, NLRs were not as useful in CD patients as in UC patients [150][151][152].…”

“…Apart from that, NLR assessment may play a substantial role in the case of acute limb ischemia in terms of forecasting survival and the risk of amputation [ 22 ]. Strictly intertwined with inflammatory processes, the progression and postoperative complications of several malignancies as well as the clinical outcome of inflammatory diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), could be predicted by the levels of GFAP [ 23 ], RDW [ 24 ], and NLR [ 25 , 26 , 27 ]. The prognostic significance of BNP and NLR is also evident in individuals presented with congestive heart failure [ 28 , 29 ].…”

“…Some anti-inflammatory and anti-cytokine therapies have been studied to treat coronary heart disease ( 27 – 29 ). In healthy individuals, the NLR value is approximately 1.65–1.70 ( 9 ). Our result was 2.303 ± 1.278 in all 2,827 observers, higher than the literature reported.…”
