Inflammatory Biomarkers Interleukin 1 Beta (IL-1β) and Tumour Necrosis Factor Alpha (TNF-α) Are Differentially Elevated in Tobacco Smoke Associated COPD and Biomass Smoke Associated COPD

Abstract: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide, is characterized by abnormal activation of inflammatory cells. The increased pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β), further amplify the inflammation. We evaluated the dose response relationship of IL-1β and TNF-α levels and severity of airflow limitation, and differential responses in IL-1β and TNF-α between biomass COPD (BMS-COPD) and tobacco s… Show more

“…Inflammatory mediator including IL‐1β and TNF‐α have an important effect on airway inflammation in COPD (Chunhua et al., 2017). Evidence have demonstrated that TNF‐α is one of important characteristic of COPD and also has correlation with severity of COPD (Shetty et al., 2021). Pauwels and Rabe (2004) found that the levels of IL‐1β in the lung of COPD model were significantly increased when compared with nonsmokers.…”

“…IL-1β has been reported as a biomarker of COPD severity because individuals with COPD present higher serum levels of IL-1β (24). In addition, increased IL-1β in COPD patient samples is linked to cigarette smoke and viruses (25). Moreover, IL-1β is a major inducer of IL-8 in bronchial epithelial cells and essential for neutrophil airway in ammation in patients with COPD(26).…”

“…The increased of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α and IL-1β, further amplify the inflammation in smoking chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. IL-1β and TNF-α levels, and the severity of airflow limitations, were deferentially elevated in tobacco smoke associated COPD in comparison to biomass smoke associated COPD [69]. COPD is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide, and is characterised by abnormal activation of inflammatory cells.…”
