Inflammation-Associated Co-morbidity Between Depression and Cardiovascular Disease

Abstract: Morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is exceedingly high worldwide. Depressive illness is a serious psychiatric illness that afflicts a significant portion of the world population. Epidemiological studies have confirmed the high co-morbidity between these two disease entities. The co-morbidity is bidirectional and the mechanisms responsible for it are complex and multifaceted. In addition to genetic, biological systems, psychosocial, and behavioral factors that are involved include the centr… Show more

“…There is growing evidence of comorbidities for anxiety, depression and CVD (Davidson, 2012; Glassman, 2007; Halaris, 2009; Huffman et al, 2013; Ruo et al, 2003), challenging the current research community to provide animal models in order to investigate the mechanisms by which behavioral stress during the developmental stages of life influences adult cardiovascular function. Multiple models of perinatal programming have shown to induce a significant increase in blood pressure in the offspring.…”

“…Clinical evidence shows a strong bidirectional comorbidity between depression and cardiovascular disease (CVD) (Cuijpers & Smit, 2002;Halaris, 2009;Hare, Toukhsati, Johansson, & Jaarsma, 2014;Kuehl, Penninx, & Otte, 2012). Multiple pathogenic mechanisms appear to contribute to the increased cardiovascular risk in depressed patients, precipitate cardiovascular dysregulation and depressive illness (DiVincenzo et al, 2014;Steptoe & Kivimaki, 2012).…”
