Inflammation and its resolution and the musculoskeletal system

Abstract: Summary Inflammation, an essential tissue response to extrinsic/intrinsic damage, is a very dynamic process in terms of complexity and extension of cellular and metabolic involvement. The aim of the inflammatory response is to eliminate the pathogenic initiator with limited collateral damage of the inflamed tissue, followed by a complex tissue repair to the preinflammation phenotype. Persistent inflammation is a major contributor to the pathogenesis of many musculoskeletal diseases including ageing-related pat… Show more

“…Excessive copper also produces large amounts of free radicals that cause lipid peroxidation and interfere with bone metabolism, leading to a decrease in bone cortex and bone strength. Oxidation can also, in itself, promote ageing and reduce bone strength [42] , [43] , [44] , [45] . In Wilson's disease, characterised by copper deposition, epidemiological studies show that the BMD of cortical and cancellous bone are normal, whereas the risk of fracture is increased.…”

“…Inflammation is the first protective response to infection or injury of human body driven in a tissue compartment by a specific set of immune and inflammatory cells with the aim of restoring its structural and functional integrity after exposure to an adverse stimulus [128]. Numerous researches have carried out about the anti-inflammatory and proinflammatory properties of chitosan and its derivatives.…”

“…Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is an important public health problem and one of the world's leading disabling diseases [1,2]. OA is currently considered a whole joint disease involving changes in articular cartilage, subchondral trabecular bone (STB), and other articular tissues [3][4][5]. Previous studies suggested that STB is closely related to the structure and function of the covered cartilage, and they interact as a functioning synergistic unit [6][7][8].…”
