Infinitives of affect and intersubjectivity: on the indexical interpretation of the Finnish independent infinitives

Abstract: This article presents an analysis of the structure and use of the Finnish independent infinitives. Although typological studies have shown that syntactically independent non-finite constructions are widespread in many languages, the understanding of their semantic and intersubjective motivation is still in its early stages. The current paper aims to enrich the understanding of independent non-finite constructions by closely looking at free-standing infinitive constructions in spoken and written Finnish: it com… Show more

“…7 Kiparsky (2019) proposes another more recent variation of the same idea, thus according to his analysis the 'functional syntactic structure of Finnish nonfinite clauses is a transparent reflection of the overt morphological makeup of their participial and infinitival lexical heads' (Kiparsky 2019:22). 8 Visapää (2008Visapää ( , 2022 shows that the A-infinitive (see Table 1) has non-elliptical standalone uses. The computational analysis proposed in this article does not rule out standalone uses of infinitives that occur in complement positions.…”

“…Finnish infinitives and participles constitute a complex and large syntactic class with a mix of nominal and verbal properties (Ikola 1974;Hakulinen & Karlsson 1979: Ch.14;Wiik 1981;Vainikka 1989Vainikka , 1995Toivonen 1995;Koskinen 1998;Vilkuna 2000:Ch.8.1, 9;Ylikoski 2003;Visapää 2008Visapää , 2022Ylinärä 2018;Kiparsky 2019;Jussila 2020). Application of computational modeling to this class suggests, however, that it constitutes a homogeneous natural kind based on a truncated clause with one functional layer above the verb phrase.…”
