Infill Reserve Growth Resulting From Gas Huff-n-Puff and Infill Drilling-A Case History

Abstract: The economic exploitation of the East Canton Oil Field truly began with the technology advancement of hydraulic stimulation in the early to mid 1940's. This field which encompasses approximately 175,000 acres in Stark, Carroll and Tuscarawas Counties of northeastern Ohio, realizes the vast majority of its production from the Clinton Sandstone reservoir which is located at a depth of 4000-6000 feet. Primary development of this field on 40 acre spacing, has resulted in the drilling and completion of in excess of… Show more

“…The Clinton sandstone is considered as a low-permeability reservoir. The results of previous core measurements show permeability of less than 1 md for Clinton sandstone. The average permeability of 10–19 md was reported for the reservoir in the western flank of the Appalachian basin used for CO 2 cyclic injection test. ,,, Riley et al studied the geological characterization of the middle zone of East Canton oil field for a potential CO 2 EOR. Matrix permeability estimated based on core data from three wells in the East Canton oilfield varies between 0.65 and 1.05 md.…”

“…Our approach was to integrate the available data and use analytical tools and some small conceptual models. This is not unlike moving-mosaic techniques used for infill drilling (Voneiff and Cipolla 1996;Guan et al 2002;Hudson et al 2000;Hudson et al 2001;Wozinak et al 1997) or the quality-map approach (da Cruz et al 2004). A frequent approach to analytical simulation consists of modeling a well pattern (generally five-spot patterns), with the assumption that the obtained results represent the average performance of a particular sector of the reservoir.…”

“…Since then, a lot of scientists have conducted rock physical modelling experiment and numerical simulation studies (Haln and Monger 1990;Wozinak et al 1997), these basically figure out: when the gas was injected rapidly into the storage, it would cause a series of reactions, such as the instigation of the Jamin effect, flow-around, water-locking, gas-locking, and emptying (Kurihara et al 2000). These factors exert significant effects on production efficiency in underground gas storage facilities (Udegbunan et al 1994).…”
