The Tehran metropolitan area is extremely vulnerable to earthquakes due to the location of its active faults and its dense population. Assessing the probable damage of a high magnitude earthquake on buildings and facilities relies on a precise structural survey, which has an empirical basis depending on historic ground motions. The probability of damage and failure in discrete limits based on different ground motions is estimated by fragility curves. Using the most matching fragility curves for buildings in Tehran, the vulnerability of the hospitals in the capital, as one of the most critical structures in crisis management of disasters, was investigated in this study. Subsequently, the existing fragility curves, developed for Tehran and the other seismic prone countries such as Japan and the United States, were compared considering the typology of Tehran’s hospitals. Finally, the possible damages for each hospital were calculated based on the most conservative fragility curve and the most pessimistic scenario, which were used to evaluate the seismic vulnerability of hospitals and health care systems for different damage states. After zoning the damage of therapeutic areas of Tehran, it was observed that at least 2% to 10% damage occurred in all hospitals of Tehran, and none of the healthcare centers would remain structurally undamaged after a strong earthquake with the moment magnitude of 7 or more. In addition, the healthcare buildings could be prone to significant structural damage, especially in southern parts, which necessitates proactive management plans for Tehran metropolitan area.

To reveal the stress transfer mechanism of the flange in a split Hopkinson tension bar, explicit finite element analyses of the impact of the hollow striker on the flange were performed across a range of flange lengths. The tensile stress profiles monitored at the strain gauge position of the incident bar are interpreted on a qualitative basis using three types of stress waves: bar (B) waves, flange (F) waves, and a series of reverberation (Rn) waves. When the flange length (Lf) is long (i.e., Lf > Ls, where Ls is the striker length), the B wave and first reverberation wave (R1) are fully separated in the time axis. When the flange length is intermediate (~Db < Lf < Ls, where Db is the bar diameter), the B and F waves are partially superposed; the F wave is delayed, then followed by a series of Rn waves after the superposition period. When the flange length is short (Lf < ~Db), the B and F waves are practically fully superposed and form a pseudo-one-step pulse, indicating the necessity of a short flange length to achieve a neat tensile pulse. The magnitudes and periods of the monitored pulses are consistent with the analysis result using the one-dimensional impact theory, including a recently formulated equation for impact-induced stress when the areas of the striker and bar are different, equations for the reflection/transmission ratios of a stress wave, and an equation for pulse duration time. This observation verifies the flange length-dependent stress transfer mechanism on a quantitative basis.

Currently, the steel plate shear wall (SPSW) is commonly used in high-rise steel buildings as a lateral load resisting system. The SPSW consists of the boundary frame and infill plate. The objectives of this work are to study the effect of same weight different infill plate types, the effect of boundary frame characteristics, and the effect of infill plate weld separation on the seismic behavior of the SPSWs. A numerical method was proposed to have a comprehensive comparison of seismic behaviors of different types of SPSWs, having the same weight. The model was validated by using previously published numerical and experimental works. The study covers unstiffened (USPSW), stiffened (SSPSW), and corrugated steel plate shear wall (CSPSW). Similarly, the effect of boundary frame stiffness and welding separation characteristics between the plate and boundary frame will be studied, and key issues, such as load-carrying capacity, stiffness, and energy-dissipation capacity were discussed deeply. It was found that the SSPSW has better seismic behavior than USPSW and CSPSW. SSPSW has a higher load-carrying capacity than USPSW, and CSPSW by about 14, 24%, respectively. USPSW is more sensitive to the stiffness of the boundary frame than CSPSW. The plate welding separation has a greater impact on the initial stiffness than load-carrying capacity. When plate-column welding separation occurs, the initial stiffness, and the energy dissipation capacity reduces by about 21%, and 14%. Whereas, when the plate-beam separation occurs, the initial stiffness and energy dissipation capacity reduce by about 36%, and 20.5%.
