“…There are some published records of a higher incidence of infestation among male hosts, but there are other records where the parasites did not present a preference for either sex of the host (Van Wyk, 1982;Schuldt & RodriguesCapitulo, 1987;Campos & Campos, 1989;Astete-Espinoza & Caceres, 2000;Masunari et al, 2000). In contrast, there have also been reports of a higher prevalence of infestation on females than on male hosts (Allen, 1966;Szidat, 1977;Truesdale & Mermilliod, 1977;Beck, 1979;Guzmán & Román-Contreras, 1983;Jay, 1989;Schuldt & Damborenea, 1989;Román-Contreras & Romero-Rodríguez, 2005), with which the present study agrees.…”

“…One of these explanations is related to size, since the larger hosts are usually the more infested ones (Beck, 1979;Campos & Campos, 1989;Román-Contreras & Romero-Rodríguez, 2005); this would explain why females of T. floridanus were more infested by Bopyrinella thorii than males. Allen (1966), Anderson (1975a), Truesdale & Mermilliod (1977), Beck (1979), and Schuldt & Damborenea (1989) also have suggested that this supposed preference for a bigger size of the host is linked to a very short average period of the female's intermoult, and a longer life span. These conditions could represent reproductive advantages for the parasite, such as extended longevity, and hence the possibility of achieving a greater number of spawnings.…”

“…The similarity in the intermoult periods observed in males and females was consistent with the previous reports in the prawn M. borellii (collins, 1996). By contrast, Palaemonetes argentines Nobili, 1901 females had longer intermoult periods than males (schuldt & dAmboreneA, 1989), which is similar to other decapod species (hArtnoll, 1982). The differences in intermoult period between sexes were not observed for A. uruguayana in this study, but this may be related to the study seasonality, or to environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, salinity, and food availability) and the need for gonad maturation for the production of a new generation, as occurs in other species (sArdá, 1983;collins, 1996;renzulli & collins, 2000;VegA-VillAsAnte et al, 2006).…”

“…Former evidences indicate that few P. argentinus adult females reach the breeding season of their second year of life (RODRIGUEZ CAPÍTULO, 1992). In populations of the same species but from other regions of Argentina, the recruitment of juveniles is restricted to January-March (SCHULDT & DAMBORENEA, 1989;SPIVAK, 1997). RODRIGUEZ CAPÍTULO & FREYRE (1989) have also described the existence of three cohorts corresponding to the reproductive periods of October, December, and January.…”

“…Several studies have been published on this species concerning larval development (MENU MARQUE, 1973), growth (RODRIGUEZ CAPÍTULO & FREYRE, 1989), reproductive biology (GOLDSTEIN & LAURÍA DE CIDRE, 1974;SCHULDT & DAMBORENEA, 1989), survival and fecundity (RODRIGUEZ CAPÍTULO, 1992), bioecological aspects (DONATTI, 1986), and morphology (SOUSA et al, 1997;SOUSA & PETRIELLA, 2000, 2001DÍAZ et al, 1998); however the molt cycle of natural populations had never been investigated.…”
