Inferential Statistics

Abstract: Statistical inference lies at the foundation of modern science and at the core of scientific inquiry in archaeology. It provides a suite of formal methods for describing populations from sample data, and enables the assessment and comparison of archaeological hypotheses formulated as statistical models. This essay reviews the basic premises of the three main paradigms of statistical inference used in archaeology.
