Inference of magnetic fields in the very quiet Sun

Abstract: Context. Over the past 20 yr, the quietest areas of the solar surface have revealed a weak but extremely dynamic magnetism occurring at small scales (<500 km), which may provide an important contribution to the dynamics and energetics of the outer layers of the atmosphere. Understanding this magnetism requires the inference of physical quantities from high-sensitivity spectro-polarimetric data with high spatio-temporal resolution. Aims. We present high-precision spectro-polarimetric data with high spatial reso… Show more

“…However, recent Fe i 1565 nm measurements with GRIS at the 1.5 m GREGOR telescope have resulted in filling factors typically below 20%, with a maximum around 1% (Martínez González et al 2016). These values are smaller than those derived by Beck and Rezaei (2009) despite their superior resolution (0.4 ), but they refer to a small fraction of the observed FOV, only the 12% of the area where the vector magnetic field could be determined reliably.…”

“…Actually, there is growing evidence that the inclination of IN fields depends on the field strength (e.g., Beck and Rezaei 2009;Martínez González et al 2016). The stronger fields are found in intergranular lanes and are also the more vertical.…”

“…) and this property of the infrared lines has been exploited to probe deep into the solar photosphere, in the sunspot penumbrae, by Borrero et al Article number, page 1 of 11 arXiv:1904.07306v1 [astro-ph.SR] 15 Apr 2019 A&A proofs: manuscript no. Deep_convection_arxiv (2016), but also in the quiet Sun (Martínez González et al 2007Lagg et al 2016;Martínez González et al 2016;Kiess et al 2018). Also, the mean solar spectrum of these lines was modeled, either to infer atomic parameters (Borrero et al 2003) or to verify state-of-the-art MHD simulations (Beck et al 2013).…”

“…The utility of Stokes inversion algorithms has resulted in the outputs being employed in various studies ( [24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32]; to name some recent examples) and are a key technique in establishing and analysing height varying physical parameters in solar observations. In terms of wave phenomena the view is much less clear.…”
